From
Rob Slavin, Massachusetts Girls' Volleyball Coaches Association President:
MIAA Board of
Directors reverses its decision and adopts NCAA rules
At its June 11,
2002 meeting the MIAA Board of Directors voted to adopt NCAA Rules for
Volleyball for the 2002-2003 season. This vote, on the heels of a
decision to stay with NCAA Rules for high school football, brings into
play a number of key rule changes for the fall. As most coaches are
aware, the NCAA began writing its rules last year when the NAGWS discontinued
its volleyball rules writing.
A very important
meeting will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2002 at the MIAA Offices in
Franklin, MA from noon-3 PM to discuss the various rules changes. All coaches
are strongly encouraged to attend this meeting. Directions
to the MIAA Offices.
The NCAA Rules use
the former NAGWS Rules to a large extent with the following key changes:
-
Rally Scoring. We will
play 2-out-of-3, 30 point games (NO CAP) at both the varsity and JV level.
State Tournament games will be a best 3-out-of-5 format (30 point) with
a fifth game to 15.
-
Net Serve. Will
be implemented in 2002-2003.
-
Use of the libero player.
We will use the libero player (with 18 substitutions).
We will continue to
update this site throughout the summer. Please plan on attending
this important August meeting.
