About the Bay State Games

The Bay State Games is the official state games in Massachusetts hosted by the Massachusetts Amateur Sports Foundation. Volleyball is one of several sports that awards medals in this olympic-style festival. 2008 is the 27th year for the Bay State Games.

There is a $15 tryout fee and a finalist fee of $50 if you make the team. You will receive a t-shirt for tryouts and a uniform and BSG jacket as a finalist.

Volleyball has 5 divisions:
Boys' and Girls' Scholastic: through junior year of high school
Men's and Women's Open: high school senior and up
Men's Masters: over 30 years old

There are 6 teams in each division, each formed by geographic proximity:
Metro, Southeast, Northeast, Coastal, Central, and West

The tournament format is that each team plays each other 2 games in round-robin play. The top 4 teams go on to play in the medal round on Sunday: 1v4, 2v3. The losers of these matches play for the bronze medal, the winners play for the gold.

Summary of Rules for the Bay State Games

  • You must live or go to school in the area you are trying out for 30 days before tryouts.
  • You must be able to play on the weekend of the games. (Duh!)
  • Up to four athletes from the same school can play on the team. (2 for college)
  • You can play in more than one sport as long as the finals don't conflict.
  • Don't try to 'bend' the rules. If your team uses an ineligible player, you will forfeit all your games.
